We have known Dani since high school & ever since she started dating Nash, we had hoped we would get the chance to photograph this dream team. They started renting the most amazing apartment in San Francisco & asked us to do a lifestyle shoot with them in their first place & afterwards, explore some places they love in the city. This was one of the first shoots we ever did like this & we got completely hooked. It was a very influential day as we decided this was definitely the direction we wanted to take our photography >>> a journalistic approach, with a genuine point of view about real life with real couples.
Your engagement shoot should be a fun & memorable time for you. It's always great to incorporate areas that are meaningful to you as a couple...it brings a special & sentimental aspect to the shoot that is always appreciated when you look back on that time. With that being said, don't sacrifice great light & the beautiful outdoors just because you absolutely want to take photos at this restaurant that you had your first date. You need great, natural light to make indoor photos work (unless you are ok with your photographer using a flash or bringing in lighting - which personally, Chad & I do not like to do). Make sure to talk to your photographer & ask them ideas of locations depending on the time of year & day that you are taking photos. Dani & Nash's apartment totally worked because it had incredible windows & the sunlight streaming in was beautiful...but not all apartments are created equal! Send some photos or a video of your place to your photographer when the light is best to ask if this would work for a lifestyle shoot. Your goal for your engagement photos is to look natural & yourselves - to embrace your quirks & chemistry as a couple. This doesn't need to be a huge production with props & a million outfit changes showcasing each aspect of your personalities. You are celebrating the fact you are on the journey to spend the rest of your lives together! Your engagement session is a time to soak that up & normally half way through the shoot, someone ends up saying, "Oh my gosh - we're getting married!!!" And we hug & high five & laugh & cry & it's just a wonderful moment....that is the heart & soul of this time together & having a photographer that can add that joy to your session is the one for you.
